USAF student high altitude research pilot Michael Lee undergoing pressure and mobility tests in an altitude chamber while wearing an inflated pressure suit and helmet. The suit is the USAF MC-3 which has an inner rubber bladder totally enclosing the pilot's body from neck to ankles and fitted with pressure boots and gloves, providing pressure over the entire torso and limbs. The helmet is the high altitude MA-2A full-head pressure helmet for use at altitudes in excess of 70000ft. Inside the helmet, the pilot's head is totally enclosed in an inner rubber, inflatable full-head rubber helmet with integral neckseal bladder. Inside the inner helmet are large chamois covered rubber earphones, inflatable pressure bladders and chamois covered padding, with a microphone mounted on the inner padding. The faceplate and its oxygen system has pressure control valves, heated anti-fogging filaments and a self-sealing drink/feed port. The helmet provides constant pressure and oxygen to the pilot's head and face balanced with the pressure suit.

Transformative Reality - Example user trial

Video Review of the Vuzix VR920 Virtual Reality Device

I was quite excited a few months ago when I stumbled across the Vuzix VR920, a lightweight set of virtual reality eye glasses with dual hi-res displays. The amount of features packed into the three ounce package is really impressive: * dual 640x480 VGA progressive scan LCDs with a 32 degree field (scales to 1024x768) * head tracking * built in microphone * dual speakers * USB powered * nVidia stereo driver support Most importantly for us, it supports Second Life, as well as World of Warcraft, and a suite of games. The Second Life support is currently not native, but works well with mouselook mode, as I demonstrate in the video below. Vuzix was kind enough to loan me one to test out with Second Life and is actively seeking enterprising developers who may be interested in helping develop native Second Life support for the device. The VR920 is the first device that supports immersive three dimensional graphics, head tracking, as well as microphone and audio all in one device.

The original Polhemus Fastrack was the reference standard for Virtual Reality systems in the 90's. It quickly and continuously computed the X, Y, and Z position and the Pitch, Roll, and Yaw angles of up to 4 individual mini-sensors in under 10 milliseconds. Perfect for tracking a VR helmet or dataglove. This video demonstrates how to setup the Fastrack and how it works with the supplied Polhemus software.

Remember those leaked patent renderings that surfaced after New Years? Turns out it was no joke, as Smart has revealed the Forspeed concept car. Poised to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 10 days, the Forspeed concept is an electric powered roadster. The roofless design is reminiscent of the Smart Crossblade from 2002 but don't be fooled, this is only a diversion of its true purpose - to preview the design of the next-generation fortwo and resurrected forfour five-door models. In an interview with Mercedes head of design, Steffen Kohl told Auto Express, "Look at the fullness of the car's exterior surfaces. This is important and will be reflected in future production models". The Forspeed is powered by a 40bhp (40 PS / 30 kW) electric motor mounted in the rear and has a range of 84 miles (135 km). There is also a 7bhp (7 PS / 5 kW) overboost feature which is activated by a flick of a switch. Top speed is 75 mph (120 km/h). Exterior features include a honeycomb mesh grille, LED headlamps, photovoltaic solar cells in the base of the windscreen and a hidden plug-in socket under the smart badge on the rear which leads down to a lithium-ion battery. Like current smart models the interior pursues a "downsized premium" design as seen in the exposed mounting bolts in the door panels, center console and steering wheel. Towards Immersive Journalism: The IPSRESS Experience

As journalism goes through extraordinary transformation, Immersive Journalism offers a novel way to utilize gaming and Virtual Reality platforms to convey news and non-fiction stories. These platforms offer the user an immersive experience that can compliment and extend news media reports in traditional media. The experience depicted here explores how to report the information provided in FOIA obtained transcripts documenting the interrogation of Detainee 063, Al Khatani in Guantanamo Bay Prison in 2002 and 2003. It also attempts to describe, through this new platform, the multiple news reports on detainees being held for extended periods in stress positions. The collaboration with scientists Mel Slater and Maria Sanchez-Vives informs this effort with current research on the perception of our sense of embodiment, allowing for a viewer to undergo an illusionary transformation of the physical body, thus perceptually, if not literally, entering the body of the other.
