The Augmented Reality Pad (AR PAD) (2001)

Prototyped in 2001, this device allow groups of individuals to view synthetic objects in real scenes, creating a collaborative "augmented reality". Unlike a head-mounted augmented reality display, the AR Pad is unencumbering, allowing users to see each others eye gaze and facial expressions. These non-verbal cues are commonly used in face-to-face collaboration. The ARPad was first demonstrated at the 2001 International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR). It was developed by Dmitryi Mogilev, Mark Billinghurst, and Kiyoshi Kiyokawa (University of Washington HITLAB) and Jarrell Pair. The software was built using a modified version of the ARToolkit running on both Linux and Windows PC's. An updated version of the demonstration was shown at the 2002 SIGCHI conference. HMD and Multitouch Concepts 3D Pixel Display 9/10

I wanted to clarify some things about the last 8 videos that I did on HMD glasses and multitouch devices, but I decided to change directions. Instead, I wanted to show a concept/invention of a 3D pixel that I was working on that uses a specially designed lens that doesn't look like anything I've ever seen or heard of before. The last video of the series (video 10) will spend sometime explaining how you can extend this design so that you have a pixel that can show images in any direction. So in the end what you would have is a holographic display panel. Video 10 will be uploaded soon.

Immersive Touch Haptic AR System

During a trip to UIC (University of Illinois, Chicago), I had a chance to take a look at a haptic AR (augmented reality) system. Here is a technical overview of the system, the Immersive Touch TM. The system consists of two phantom haptic devices, an active stereoscopic display, head tracking, and although the video doesn't show it very well, it comes in a very nice case on wheels that holds the PC and packs up for shipping to conferences and such.
